My initial response to finding out we would have to make our own websites for this course was one of annoyance. It wasn’t annoyance at anyone but myself because I knew I would have a difficult time learning how WordPress works. I have never been a “tech savvy” guy, so I knew that I would have to spend a lot of time figuring out how to make the site work to my advantage. The idea in and of itself is a good one, and I am sure if the person knew what they were doing, it would be efficient. For tech illiterates like me, we might spend more time trying not to get lost on our own site than actually posting on it.
I am a pretty old fashioned person when it comes to most things, and I do prefer pen and paper. I like having the actual thing in front of me instead of looking at it through a screen. I don’t have to worry about the battery running out or something crashing. The hard copy is always the most reliable.
The only other experience I’ve had with technology in the classroom was that my school district gave every student (nay the primary kids) a Google account. So we had access to Google Drive, Sheets, Classroom, Calendars, etc. I was a freshman the first year they tried it and I hated it up until senior year when I had to use it practically every day. I think it’ll be the same with WordPress and eportfolio: I will hate it at first and then gradually warm up to it.
Thanks for your honesty. I agree with you about the pen and paper, but I am also interested in exploring the ways our classroom can use the internet to extend our learning. Keep an open mind, and please keep that honesty coming!
