Hello! My name is Alexander J. Williams, and I am a first year student at the University of New England. I drove all the way from a 17,000 population town to come here. Currently, I am studying psychology while on a pre-med track. I’m considering minoring in communication because I also am interested in video and film production and screenwriting. I am involved in the jazz club and UNE EMS here on campus. I have been playing the trumpet for a little over seven years and I just recently picked up guitar.
Growing up in Missouri and then moving 1400 miles away, I was bound to have a culture shock. My first thought when I got here was literally “Wow, there’s a lot of liberals here!” Honestly, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be though. I always say that it’s funny to hear the accent that everyone has up here, but I’m the one with the accent apparently.
I went to a small high school back home. The public school wasn’t particularly known for its stellar academic system, but I lucked out with some pretty awesome teachers. I never had to study before coming to college. I was always the type of student that could absorb what the teacher was saying (I’d take notes too) and just remember it come test time. I learned quickly that that wouldn’t fly in college!
I’m a fairly reserved person and very passionate about my interests. I read and write a ton. I like watching stand-up comedians and am open to new suggestions. I care a lot about the medical field and people’s health in general; volunteering has always been very important to me. Originally I wanted to join the military like my dad and other family members have done, but my heart condition disqualifies me from enlisting. Interest in becoming a doctor happened for me after both of my grandfathers were diagnosed with cancer. Being exposed to illness in the family always changes a person and I feel the need to contribute to society. Doing it in that way just makes sense to me.
Welcome to the website!
I love reading about you all, and I, too, love to watch stand up comedy. I’m happy you decided to make the long trip to Maine. Thanks for sharing a little of your journey!
